I love his work for its richness, imagination and the way it's rooted in his faith. <A HTTP://WWW.SYMMONSROBERTS.COM/PAGES/POETRY/CORPUS.HTM HREF: =>Corpus is his best book so far, but he has a new collection coming out in, if I remember rightly, August that he reckons is his strongest yet.Andrew Philiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10006232197499662437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23932488.post-34272964691752546362008-05-15T15:22:00.000+01:002008-05-15T15:22:00.000+01:00Yes, good point. Never heard of Michael Symmons Roberts, I'll look him up.Marion McCreadyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04657757253873577465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23932488.post-27974036429947375712008-05-15T13:27:00.000+01:002008-05-15T13:27:00.000+01:00It's a good aim to have. You know, you needn't necessarily be afraid of writing bad Christian poems: just as every poet has to write a lot of bad stuff before they can write anything good, Christian poets probably need to write bad Christian poems before they find the way to bring their faith into their work successfully.

The big problem generally arises a Christian assumes that, because something they've written involves their faith, it's good. I can see from your comment you're not going to fall into that trap!

The writers I mentioned in the post have certainly helped to show me ways to avoid the trap, not least Michael Symmons Roberts. It was Roddy Lumsden, a confirmed atheist, who first introduced me to his work. You might be surprised at some of the people who are enthusiastic about good contemporary religious poetry, but I they're enthusiastic about it because it's good poetry.Andrew Philiphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10006232197499662437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23932488.post-19408317260792862012008-05-15T09:22:00.000+01:002008-05-15T09:22:00.000+01:00Fascinating post, I admit I generally steer clear ...Fascinating post, I admit I generally steer clear of my faith when writing poems because I haven't yet worked out how to bring it in and write a good poem, there's a lot of pretty awful Christian poetry out there. I guess you could say it's something I'm aiming towards. There is some good contemporary Christian poetry around, I just think it's hard to do.Marion McCreadyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04657757253873577465noreply@blogger.com
